The first season for the Ice Caps team was during 2008-2009. Coach Lauren Capstick created the team to address the lack of youth teams in the National Capital Region. There were only six young skaters on the team that first year, and instead of folding the team, Lauren and her two assistant coaches decided to register the team in the Pre-Novice category so that they (the coaches) could skate with the team. That way, there were enough skaters to enter an event (the minimum team size allowed in Pre-Novice was 8, and there was no age limit that season).
The team was almost named the "Pineapples and Bananas" because of the calypso themed music that the team used that year. Luckily, one of the skaters thought of the name Ice Caps – referring to the fact that the team represents the National Capital Region. Although the team represents the Nepean Skating Club, since its inception, the team has had skaters from many different local clubs including: March Kanata, Glen Cairn, Goulbourn, Minto, Gloucester, Rockland, and Alymer.
